La Nit de les Garnatxes - the night of Garnacha
"La Nit de les Garnatxes" is a big festival, the largest festival in the small town of Capçanes. It is a wine festival dedicated solely to one grape variety of the region. The winery of Capçanes has come up with something very special for this: four different Garnacha wines, from the four different soil types found around the town. The typical slate of the region, the sand further up in the high-altitude areas, and further down clay and limestone.
The wine & the soil
The wine and the soil on which it grows is an almost endless story, as each soil type has its own characteristics. Clay and limestone can retain water well. Sand, on the other hand, cannot hold water at all, but it is very mineral-rich and forces the vine to root much deeper. How does it taste when the same grape variety is grown on different soils? In the cellar, all grape batches were treated as similarly as possible, which is why the differences are so fascinating.
Comic & wine - the people behind it
Each bottle is wrapped in a small comic that tells how the respective soil affects the wine and how the wine tastes. The comics are in English, but the pictures are quite self-explanatory. And the characters in the comic are real. It's the team from Capçanes, led by the driving force of the winery, Jürgen Wagner, a Heidelberger who has lived and worked there for decades.

It should be revealed that the wines all have the lush fruit of Garnacha, have little tannin, and are great to drink. Each wine is simply enjoyable on its own. One is a bit lighter, while others are more powerful and dense. It's exciting to try two, three, or all four side by side. Invite friends over and taste your way through.
